The Portray Society
Sound Visual Sketch Identities
The Portray Society is a performative process involving the Artists (sound and visual) and a limited amount of Guests in a room, with the task to sonically and visually sketch potraits of the so gathered community.
When people enter the room/gallery/place, the space is at first empty.
The exhibition will be created during the event. Artists and guests are developing together the exhibition as described below.
At the end of the process, the exhibition is opened in form of an audio/visual installation or of an audio/visual concert.
Steps of the process
1.Step
Preparation and Collection:
What’s emerging, what is important?
Guests are asked to prepare their expressive statements
Donation:
Guests give their statements to the microphone
2.Step:
Compose / Compost your modelling material:
Guests are invited to prepare gestures, faces, intentions to share during the modelling
3. Step:
Guests start the modelling action:
while the Artists will be composing – sketching sonically and visually
4. Step:
All sketches come together in the form of a Symbolic Community. Doors are open to the outdoor to finally Experience the visual and sound community generated by the whole process
5. Step:
Assimilate, enjoy!
Further explanation of the performing process
Step 1.
The Collection – Action 1. Guests are asked to reflect upon their own personal issues and condense them into short key-phrases or key-words.
Phrases and words will be “donated” to the Artists. The action takes place through a microphone.
The two Artists assist Guests in order to focus on their visual and aural perception.
Step 2.
Guests are also asked to prepare their body/face/voice core actions to express their reflected statement.
The sound and visual processing canvasses are prepared by the Artists.
Step 3.
The Modelling and the Portraying phases start. While one person stands in the modelling spot and shows his presence, the sound artist processes the “donated” vocal/sound material to create a realtime audio composition.
At the same time, the visual artist is drawing; an image-sketch will emerge out of this process.
Both Artists “sketch” at the same time, for a pre-defined amount of time – maximum 10 minutes. More extensive duration should be agreed with the community or with the client.
Step 4.
The Concerto action or The Symbolic Community – Action 2.
The visual and the audio contents will be presented on site, according to the format and logistics of the production. Either an audio visual concert is possible, projecting/exhibiting and mixing at once the whole “symbolic community”; it’s possible to organize “individual loudspeakers” associated to each visual sketch, in order to diffuse sound portraits specifically related to visual portraits – i.e. hanging or laying on the floor-, this resulting in a polyphonic and multi-vision habitat, able to be exhibited for a longer amount of time – weeks/months.
Step 5.
Enjoy the whole Collection process and the final community Concerto; we intend media mirroring groups or individual persons as a methodology to arise proprioception and an extended sensorial awareness.
